Sizes shown below are the standard length of screws for each type of switch plate. You may need longer screws if you've pulled your devices forward or if you have extra space between your device and cover.
Covers that attach to the strap of your electrical device have shorter 5/16" screws.
This is to prevent the screws from hitting the wall surface before they get tightly screwed into place.
You need 5/16" screws for all rocker shaped devices including Decora rocker switches, block outlets, GFCI outlets, despard switches and outlets, decorator dimmer switches and old style GE or Bryant low voltage switches.
For plates with screw positioning that aligns with the electrical box's tabs, you can attach your plate with standard 1/2" screws.
Examples of box mount plates are blank electrical box covers, phone jack covers, coax cable jack plates and GE New Style covers.
If the cover mounts into the device (or strap with screw holes 2-3/8" apart), half-inch screws are standard.
This includes toggle switchplates, round outlet covers, push button faceplates and GE Bracket Mount plates for low voltage switches.
For center screw positioning, 1/2" screws are standard.
The most common center mount cover plate is for a duplex outlet.
