Q & A

Q. Where would I need to install a narrow 3-way push button light dimmer?
A. If you are planning to install a push dimmer next to another light dimmer, a ceiling fan, or even a GFCI outlet, you must use a trimmed off push button dimmer because they won't fit or will be too hot. Normal light dimming switches and ceiling fan controls have large metal flanges around them so are too wide to stack side by side, so all of these types of devices must have the flange trimmed off first, but this causes derating (meaning they can't carry as large a load without overheating). This 600 watt narrow pushbutton dimmer switch, for example, must be derated to 400 watts. Choose the untrimmed version if the narrow version is not needed.
Note: A three-way light dimmer allows you to control one lighting fixture from two separate locations. (Think of a triangle - 2 switches + 1 light.) Only one switch can be a dimmer; the other would be just a regular 3-way push-button switch.
