Description

Install Touch-Plate's PL-RLY low voltage latching relay as a direct replacement for discontinued 1550-BPL, 2500B-PL, 3000-PL or 4000-PL relays. These 4-wire relays plug into your panel to provide latching functionality for 2-wire momentary switches.

Q & A

Q. My relay has a label that says, "Replacement for Touch Plate 1550-B and 1550-BPL." How do I know which I have?
A. For systems built after mid 1985 with plug-in modules in the panel: The TPL-PL-RLY on this product page is the correct replacement for the 1550-BPL. Even though the shape is different (vintage cylinder vs. new cassette type), the functionality is the same.
Breaker feed (line in) and load wires attach to screw terminals 3 & 4; it doesn’t matter which is which. The relay just makes and disconnects the two as it cycles.
The plug is connected to 4 wires (one red, one brown and two yellow: YRBY). It is directional with a ridge/tab along one side. When plugging into the panel, this ridge faces the translucent clip in the panel and will hook under the bend to secure it in place.
Our 8" dinrail can be purchased (see link) if you would like to mount the relay in your panel that way. In this situation, we normally recommend rearranging relays so the new TPL-PL-RLY relays are on the bottom. This way, as old relays need to be replaced, new ones can just be added to the bottom. By taking the working bottom TPL-3000-PL relays and placing them higher up the panel it will be easy to replace any bad relays.

For systems built before mid 1985 without the plug:
The TPL-PL-RLY on this product page is the correct replacement for the 1550-BPL, 2500-BPL, 4000-PL, and 3000-PL relays with wire leads in systems built before 1985 (same relays as above scenario with same 4 wires YRBY – minus the plug before 1985). Even though the shape is different (vintage cylinder vs. new cassette type), the functionality is the same.

Brown wire to the relay commons (like on the model TPL-3000-RELAY), Red wire to the switches (like on the model 3000), 1 yellow to pilot common bundle to pilot light transformer, 1 yellow to the switch pilot running to the wall switch. Basically, the PL relay had a secondary set of contacts which connected to 1 transformer (for up to 30 pilot lights).

Q. I ordered the TPL-PL-RLY by mistake for my unlighted switches (no internal pilot lights, not connected to pilot light transformers like the PL-6, PL-277, etc). Can I still use this relay to replace a TPL-3000-RELAY?
A. While it is possible to make it work in this situation, it is a different shape and more expensive than just getting a new TPL-3000-RELAY. (This can be used for the older 1550-A, 1550-B, 2500-B, and 4000, too, that normally would be replaced by the TPL-3000-RELAY.) But here is how it can be done in a pinch:
Cut off the plug. Cap off the two yellow wires.
Connect the brown wire to the relay commons and red wire to the switch.
Attach breaker feed (line in) and load wires to terminals 3 & 4: it doesn’t matter which is which (much like the high voltage terminals on the 3000 relays). The relay just makes and disconnects the two as it cycles.
Mount the relay to a dinrail.
