I bought this to use as a single-pole switch. I could not find what I needed (lighted in the on position) in a single pole, so I got this one instead.
The wires you see wrapped around the mounting yoke are separate leads for the light inside the handle. In most cases a neutral will already be there in the switch box. If not, then things would get complicated. (Tying the switch's indicator light neutral to the ground wires in the box would be a code violation.)
As a single pole switch you need an ohmmeter to see which of the two dark screws you will need to use so the switch will be oriented the way you want it. (Mine is with the light at the bottom.)
If it is to be used with another 3-way switch and that other unit is to be lighted as well, normal 12/3 wiring between switches will not suffice. You will need a 12/4 to carry the feed for the other switch's light. If only one of the switches is to be lighted, then you're safe.
